Georgia Guidestones, Anonymous
http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/magazine/17-05/ff_guidestones?currentPa
[read description]The Georgia Guidestones is a large granite monument in Elbert County, Georgia, USA.
In June 1979, an unknown person or persons under the pseudonym R.C. Christian hired Elberton Granite Finishing Company to build the structure.[3]
A message consisting of a set of ten guidelines or principles is engraved on the Georgia Guidestones in eight different languages, one language on each face of the four large upright stones. Moving clockwise around the structure from due north, these languages are: English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.
1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely — improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion — faith — tradition — and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth — beauty — love — seeking harmony with the infinite.
10. Be not a cancer on the earth — Leave room for nature — Leave room for nature.

You Must Change Your Life, Peter Sloterdijk
http://seansturm.wordpress.com/2010/11/15/sloterdijk-says-you-must-change-your-life/
isbn : ISBN-10: 3518419951
[read description]A book that inspires me although i didn't read it yet : apparently the book is already in the process of being translated into English.
This site made me curious :
http://pervegalit.wordpress.com/2009/05/31/sloterdijk-you-must-change-your-life/ :
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(...)
If we are talking about changing the outside world, then it’s never a bad idea to take a look back and examine the past. Sloterdijk’s search for answers in the ancient world leads him to Greek philosophers although he is equally as willing to listen to Indian gurus, Kafka’s “fasting artist” as well as football coaches.
(...)
You Must Change Your Life is thus an “absolute imperative” – more absolute/totalitarian than Kantian categorical imperative, and is found at the very core of all religious thought and action. He who wants to change himself, must work on himself. Sloterdijk prefers a somewhat old-fashioned notion of “practice/discipline” because it speaks not of a simple change of products but of a transformation of self. And so Sloterdijk sets off in search of these practitioners and finds them in all walks of life, inside convent walls on beds of nails, but also increasingly today among professional athletes. He calls this human urge to outgrown oneself, to leave the basecamp and to reach the top of the mountain “vertical tension.”

Great minds of the time, including Diderot and Rousseau, gathered at his table.

American Pastoral, Philip Roth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QeIJ_xO7ns
isbn : 1111
[read description]Novel by Philip Roth in which Roth's alter id 'Zuckerman' tells the story about Svede Levov. Swede Levov is the good boy for whom life is just great -- except that he's not. He is the good boy whose life turns to disaster -- as if that's what good boys were for, and only the bad boys go free. Or he is the good boy whom Zuckerman can imagine and mourn for only in this way.the story hinges on Swede's 16-year-old daughter, Merry, an only, pampered child, who has fallen in with a section of the Weathermen and blown up a rural post office, killing a doctor who happened to be mailing his bills. The time is 1968. But the novel revolves not so much around this scene as around what Merry has done, the deaths she has caused, and the absurd, irresistible question of how this respectable Jewish athlete and his Irish, former-Miss-New-Jersey wife could have given birth to this once angry, now dislocated, apparently reasoning, weirdly unthinking girl.

Echo's Book, Department of Reading
http://www.reading.department.cc/
isbn : 978-90-72076-40-3
[read description]Echo's Book assembles the writings and readings of the Symposium for Readers (Berlin, December 2007). Made of two adjacent volumes, the book consists of four parallel columns. It works as if the reader had two books opened next to each other. The right volume has on its outer pages six essays in their initial form – essays from Giorgio Agamben, Mary Kelly, Terre Thaemlitz and others. In correspondence the outer pages of the left volume contain excerpts from those chats that evolved around these essays during the symposium. Fragments of the readings and writings are echoed within the two inner pages, in the double space that presents itself at the centre of this book. Here the figure of Echo, repeating phrases once in a while, makes a text recognisable that has produced itself at the margins of the symposium.
