Doing Nothing Munich Brussels | 2013
Christiane Huber is working on a collection of films, portraying people who are Doing Nothing.
The portraits attempt to explore notions of Leisure, Not-Doing and the meaning of Time related to Work.
After the residency week in ZSenne/ Art Lab in Brussels in September 2012, the project was continued in Munich in the Galerie Kullukcu.
Again, voluntary voluntary models were free to spend one or several 1-hour-sessions and use the space for whatever Doing Nothing meant to them.
An open call published on facebook and on the homepage of the Galerie was inviting them.
19 People came and joined.
In the end of the residency different people with artistic or philosophical / sociological backgrounds were invited for a panel.
They were discussing the question if a different relationship to time, work and leisure is needed in order to build a healthier and more sustainable future.
Is it a worthwhile practice in an environment, where creative identities are formed by flexibility, motivation and self- exploitation?
The flutist Michael Schmid was exploring the possibilities for Doing Nothing as an interpreter of contemporary music. The question was, if the interpreter is able to be abstinent through withdrawing himself from his role or from the music itself. Or is it a different kind of Doing Nothing, when the interpreter plays an extremely complex piece of munich, that isn´t offering any room for interpretation.
Texts from Herbert Marcuse, Paul Lafargue and other Philosophers and authors completed the project week in a lecture done by the actresses Anne- Isabelle Zils and Laura Maire.
