I died a hundred times | 2008
There are many kinds of patterns created during an individuals life time: Habits, recurring intuitions, thoughts and desires, modes of socialization, and even seemingly mundane actions such as using a spoon.
Each pattern is a result of the overwhelming longing for a sense, for something to hold on to in the chaos around us. Over the years, the functionality of those familiar patterns is fossilized, as we stick more and more to what we know, to what we think is logical.
We resort to a default that we know will work even when the degree of its efficiency is highly questionable and sometimes even destructive.
It is not that we fail to adopt new points of view. We just gradually erode our very ability to maintain a point of view.
On a deeper level, the regime of patterns also regulates and maintains identities: national, ethnic, sexual or religious.
In order to maintain personal and social status as rational and secure, we all too often sacrifice the option of discovering diverse and unusual patterns that are composed of different actions, reactions and behaviors.
In her work, Einat Tuchman upsets and tries to merge this transparent regime of patterns by deconstructing, mutating and replacing different components of them.
As soon as a fragment forms itself on stage, the elements of its construction are taken apart and reorganized in a different order to formulate another aspect.
Like a kaleidoscope of endless possibilities, "I died a hundred times" formulates itself constantly. The pattern is redesigned by changing order, participants and objects in order to rediscover new points of view on reality.
"Our perception of this world depends entirely on how we stand in relation to it" (quantum and the lotus)
