Sundance Kid | 2008
Sundance Kid
This work is a piece exploring subtle communication through
the use of the anarchic dancing body and instant composition.
'Let yourself. Move. Be moved. Touch. Be touched. Fall.
But don't sleep yet Sundance Kid !
Close your eyes to open them.'
Sundance Kid is a trio approaching the idea of a dance,
considered being a territory : a lit place on stage that
changes shapes and moves. As a complete togetherness three
bodies share a corner of the stage, defined by the light design,
in front of an audience, waiting for the show to begin.
Starting in silence, the sound of Le Muhr / Sundance Kid is
putting an end to this introduction of present bodies surrounded
by only the concrete space-noise and during approximately
30 minutes an instantly composed choreograhy is progressing.
The light is simultanously shifting from strong white to a
more ambient nuance, back to white again before it goes to
total darkness.
Towards the end of the dramaturgical bow a feeling and image
is provoked : comparable with a flaming candle, emerging from
the back with a particular rhythm, an oceanic sensation
is suggested.
The music continues and a black-out puts the scene in total
darkness while the bodies remain moving for a while. Eventually
all action is transformed into stillness.
This project was created in Brussels and London for the
Resolution Dance Festival at Robin Howard Theater in London.
We were working in residency at Charleroi-Danses/Brussels and
at The Place/London. The piece is the result of a collaborative
project between the dancers / performers Petra Soor,
Barbara Pereyra and Pepa Ubera. The dancers collaborating
had all shared the creative work directed by Alesandro Carboni/Cie
during the working laboratory at St.Martin's University/London.
The piece "What burns never returns" was performed at Ipercorpo
dance festival in Forli-Italy. In continuation Barbara Pereryra,
Pepa Ubera and Petra Soor followed their common enthusiasm for
the creation of a cooperative piece, to be presented at
Resolution Dance Festival festival.
The title refers to the song entitled 'Sundance Kid' of the
swedish Rock Band 'Le Muhr' which is used during the performance
in combination with the very specific sound by Clara Rockmore,
from 'The Art of Theremin'*.
* The Theremin is an early electronical musical instrument
controlled without contact from the player. It is named after its
Russian inventor, Professor Leon Theremin, who patented the device in 1928.
