1. To take the three main working proposals/concepts that originated from before/yellow and to test them out practically, using the city of Berlin as a backdrop.
2. To articulate further our general common interest in image and its relation to live performance through discussion, readings and writing.
After a first meeting at Netwerk in Aalst in 2005 (see before/yellow), Heike and Ula decided to meet again in order to search for the next step in their ongoing collaboration. Starting from where they left off, the pair revisited the three main project ideas generated during their last meeting: projector/duet, a performance for two dancers and two video projectors; the guerrilla magazine spread, a page to be inserted clandestinely into various woman's magazines and object/talk, an association game with words and objects, performed and projected live.
After one week of work, various attempts and numerous conversations, the pair decided to leave all three propositions and to start fresh. After a lot of experimentation with various image supports such as video & photography, the decision was taken to explore other ways of working on image that didn't necessarily involve typical image media. In the weeks following Berlin, the pair began a more historical research into image making, leading to a search for tools which predate photography and cinema, such as mirrors and optical illusions.
before/yellow and capture resulted in the production, viewmaster (2007).
