do you have 5 minutes | 2009
do you have 5 minutes was the exemplary
process and main test-case for the research of Heike Langsdorf at a.pass. Under the working-title radical_hope she explored the underlying principles of social change.
"How can a context be touched and challenged from an artistic point of view without deminishing its natural complexity ?"
do you have 5 minutes was radical_hope's first experiment. The question was with which performative logics one could 'enter' an unknown context in order to unveil its complexity. It was not the aim to analyse participation and notions of negotiating democracy : the interest was to work on a type of presence which would allow for an almost unconscious and incidental recounting about the past, - about what has been and has happened. And by this come to a concerted visualisation of what is desired and possible now.
do you have 5 minutes was a series of 5-minute-visits to the ground on rue du Chien Marin 5, in the centre of Brussels, serving as a performative means to 'keep in mind' this contested adres.
People were invited to come to rue du Chien Marin to perform an action during exactly 5 minutes, manifesting a possible future for that site.
Each month the 5-minute-visit was preceeded by a 2-hour meeting of the so-called New ImagiNatives, a small group of people participating in bringing to
light an alternative proposal for rue du Chien Marin 5.
The New ImagiNatives were open to be joined by whoever wanted to invest
his/her imagination concerning rue du Chien Marin 5 in a more pragmatic
way.
Developing a more general approach, they started a research into the neighbourhood of rue Du Flandre and mapped out the numerous 'empty' and 'waiting' spots. On an architectural as well as a political scale they invested into a proposal that would take into account not only the exemplary site on rue du Chien Marin, but as well the needs and possibilities of this entire part of the center of Brussels.
On the 7th of June 2010 the New ImagiNatives put an end to their 7 months initiative with a choreographed lecture, lasting exactly 7 x 5 minutes. The public was welcomed on the ground on rue du Chien Marin 5 in order to celebrate their 'political miniature' and announce its continuation : an official meeting with the owner of the ground, they could eventually arrange. This meeting was set up to discuss a possible collaboration between de developpers of this piece of land and the neighbors, students of architecture and urban space as well as interested artists and civilians.
Although the artistic 7-months-initiative do you have 5 minutes enabled 'civil action', the drive for elaborating
an alternative plan died out soon after June 2010.
It is up to the reader of this report to visit this 'exemplary ground' and conclude on the situation.
