playtime | 2007
Playtime was commissioned by TNT in Bordeaux for the opening of its new season (2007-2008). A tradition since 3 years, the theater holds a picnic each year to mark the start of the new season. The event is animated by a guest artist or company. Held from 7pm until midnight, it is during the picnic that the new program, announcing the artists for the next season, is distributed.
Created for this particular setting, Playtime plays with the parameters and limitations that the commission imposed. Over a duration of 6 hours the trio created a series of settings that continuously transform and animate the space.
Starting from zero (an empty theater hall) until a climax ('the total restaurant' situation) and back to zero the evening passed though very different forms of eating-occasions : through the specific use of different light-sources, soundscapes and the architectural division of the space, the ongoing picnic and its different stages of construction and deconstruction, refer to the characteristics of the following locations: a construction site, a beer-tent, a sports-café, a romantic Italian Pizzeria, a luxurious-hotel-restaurant, a disco from the 80's, a dark dance hall and eventually the merging of a train-station and a (de)construction site.
Over the course of the evening films created in very different styles by Christophe Barbet announce the programmation of TNT for the following season. These films were shown using very different media - at specific moments, a television-set, a beamer & screen, a blackboard and a digital text displays informed the public about the events of TNT for 2008/2009.
