recountables | 2010
RECOUNTABLES depend on the performer as much as on the visitor : only through getting in social contact, the image will be/come more than what you see on the wall ...
Recountables are exhibitions that depend as much on the performer as on the visitor : only through the contact between both, the image will 'come through'.
Making use of deception and boredom, recountables reflects on classical exhibition behaviour : the image consists of several labels, crediting several works of art not displayed though displayable. The labels are hanging one by one, nicely measured and divided and lit by a spot. On a carpet right in front of the labels there is a telephone that gives access to a hotline, connecting to someone ready to speak about the works announced but missing.
When the visitor picks up the phone, he or she gets in contact with the reception of the gallery that accounts as call-centre for recountables. The receptionist welcomes and connects through to radical_hope, a group of people who committed themselves to answering this call (whatever their daily life routines) during a period of the exhibition. Meaning during opening hours of the gallery a recounter is prepared to be called and involved in a ‘recountable’. For example, standing in a super-market on the cassa, a recounter will step out of the line in order to ‘do this/her job’.
When the visitor has chosen a language, a recounter starts to talk. Whatever happens in this conversation is a joint venture.
After exactly ten minutes, the receptionist interferes and ends the conversation (in case it’s still on) : the receptionist thanks the visitor for his taking part and asks whether the visitor would accept to join the recountables and becoming a recounting voice him- or herself.
If there is a positive interest, the visitor can receive a short ‘training’ at the reception of the gallery, supporting text material (Suggested Notations ***), as well as advice on how to recount/perform. At the reception, the details and availability of the recounters are registered.
