APPEAL_US / I for the Amperdans Festival 2009 - Antwerp (complete list)
"IT'S NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU FIND,
BUT ABOUT WHAT FINDS YOU.
AND REGARDLESS TO WHETHER YOU KNOW YET WHY."
APPEAL_US is the generating of context-specific bibliographies, 'pools of inspiration' consisting
of references to works of any kind (not only books!) that one
personally appreciates.
Running over a certain time and in the frame of a specific event, people are kindly asked to share 2 works that inspire them at the moment or that have served as inspiration to them for a while.
Before the event people are contacted via e-mail with an invitation to contribute as well as forward the call. During
the event an installation exposes the online list in progress, and
motivates visitors to still contribute in return of a shot of
whiskey.
The set up consists of a projection of words onto a wall, therunder a little table with two chairs, a desktop, a bottle of Whisky, a bunch of little glasses. The projection is a looping film, showing analgams of the context's 'topic'.
The screen displays a website which invites people to register their inspirations.
The rest serves the comfort of the people feeling attracted.

more background :
APPEAL_US is meant to intervene in small communities as well as communialities of shared discourses and / or practices. It embraces the fact that we behave according to the social context we are part of : the 'thoughts' one handles while deciding whether and what to upload or not are the 'performance' of APPEAL_US, the resulting list then is just what 'we' came up with 'during that time'.
